North Avenue Market

without comments

The North Avenue Market (Map) was built in 1928 as Baltimore’s first privately owned bazaar.  With stalls offering anything and everything, the market provided fresh foods for the city’s northern residents.  The site was once much larger, extending to 20th Street, but the back area was demolished and a high rise apartment complex (as seen below) was erected in its place.  The front facing the avenue remains today and contains the Windup Space, a local performance venue.

A fire ravaged the building in 1968 and the market was closed.  Various businesses occupied the building over the years including a Dollar Store and a church.  Since 2007 a development group has renovated around 20,000 square feet of the property.
